Yes, yes, I know -- there's now Amazon.com stuff posted here and other text ads. It's not that I'm hard up for money (yet), but I figured a little affiliate action would be an interesting experiment to run. For the moment, consider this a trial run. If you find the ads that annoying, register and post about it in the forum.
I've never been that much in favor of internet advertising; either it doesn't work, or it's too intrusive, or what have you. I run AdBlock Plus and a few other measures so I'm not inundated with all the crap the web tries to throw at you. I use a PVR (personal video recorder) so I can skip commercials (or there's always the fallback of the mute button). In short: not too keen on most ads. This is why I thought Google's text ads were brilliant; they didn't try to have you punching or shooting monkeys or doing what have you. They're beautifully simple and fast.
At the same time though, I do have books and products that I think are worth reading or handy, hence the Amazon links. If nothing else, everyone wins: you get to find books and other products I think are good, Amazon makes a cut, and I get a small sliver of it.
I don't expect to make a whole lot of money from it, but I do appreciate whatever comes my way. I may not make the ridiculous amount of money that some other sites do, but hey, even if I made just $10 a month, that's more for me to spend at Half Price Books or what have you.
The nice thing is that it's not all that complicated to replicate what I've done here -- this may be an article for the future.
